In women, it plays a key role in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

During the menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise in preparation for pregnancy, and if pregnancy occurs, progesterone levels continue to rise to support the growth and development of the fetus. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to the shedding of the uterine lining and the start of a new menstrual cycle.

Progesterone can also be used as a medication for a variety of purposes, such as to support fertility treatments, to prevent preterm labor, or to treat symptoms of menopause. It can be administered orally, topically, or through injection.
